The actions of the Luxembourgers who chose exile during the fateful year of 1940 have been discussed and argued at length. For the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, these were moments of terrible hesitation and anxiety, but also of heroic struggles and resistance. Grand Duchess Charlotte and the government were certainly plagued by doubts in these very serious hours, but were never willing to bargain over the essentials, to surrender or to capitulate. Despite some disagreements, they were, beyond their differences of origin and their divergent perceptions of the world, determined to fight together to regain their liberated country. Even if their decision to leave the Grand Duchy at dawn on 10 May can and must be debated again and again, their action in favour of the recovery of the country's independence can also serve as an example.
